Compounding is the name given to the process of mixing additives to polymers for the purposes of achieving specific characteristics in the end product. For example, two polymers could be blended to achieve the positive aspects of each with reduced drawbacks compared to the constituent materials. UV stabilisers, fire retardants, reinforcing fillers, colourants and processing aids can all be added to achieve the desired properties of the finished product or the manufacturing process itself. On many occasions, compounding is undertaken separately from material suppliers.
In the local polymer industry, a good supply of material is available through distributors North and South due to the extensive size of the sector.
