Extrusion is the process of forcing a molten polymer through a die to create a finished profile. In many cases, polymers are inserted into a hopper, passed through a screw where viscosity reduces due to heating and mechanical force is used to press the material through a die. The extruded part is then cooled and cut to size. This approach means that a constant cross-section is produced with the extrusion process and a high production rate can be achieved.
In the local polymer industry, extrusion is a common process with applications in food and drink tubing, packaging, civil engineering, telecoms, home products and others.
