The Northern Ireland Polymers Association (NIPA) is the industry body for the polymer (and plastics) sector in Northern Ireland. The organization is made up of defined technologies and representative sub-sectors.

These include injection moulding, thermoforming, blow moulding, extrusion, rotational moulding, composite and recycling technologies.

Representatives from leading manufactures, universities / colleges, research and development, support services make up the Membership.

The NIPA Office is located at the Innovation Centre at the Northern Ireland Science Park in  Belfast. NIPA have established several Northern Ireland Working Groups in composites, material innovations, processing improvements and energy.

Gerry was appointed Director of Research Innovation and Competence of the Northern Ireland Polymers Association in Oct 2012, following a successful career at Queens University since 1990. During his academic career he held several positions in Queens including, Co-founder and Director Polymer Processing Research Centre from 2003, Co-founder and Research Group leader, Medical Polymers Research Institute from 2004-2009. He is also on the Advisory Board Northern Ireland Polymers Association and was appointed (2007-present) Member of the International Advisory Board Sasol Polymers International /Stellenbosch University South Africa. He was President and co-founder, American Society of Plastics Engineers, European Medical Polymers Division from 2007-2010. He was invited to the Advisory Board of UK TSB Materials KTN (Jan 2013) to develop urgent strategies for the UK Polymer Processing Industry. He is also co-founder and Board member of the All Island Polymer and Plastics Network.
During his career at Queens, Gerry published around 250 technical articles in Scientific Journals and International Conferences proceedings. These also included International Keynote presentations and workshops, many of which were award winning. He has also over 50 applied research grants in the field of polymers, valued at over £15M. Many of these industry led applied research programmes, were UK award winning programmes with local companies, including Best UK TSB Knowledge Transfer Programme with Cherry Polymers in Oct 2012, Best UK KTP Industry Impact Award with Canyon Europe Ltd in Oct 2010, Best UK KTP for Engineering Excellence with UPU Industries Ltd Dromore in Oct 2002 and Best UK KTP Knowledge Transfer Programme with Jordan Plastics Ltd in Oct 1998.
In July 2012 Gerry was awarded the prestigious American Society of Plastics Engineers Educator of the Year Award in Florida USA 2012, Gerry is the first European Academic to be awarded the international prestigious prize since 1976.
